Planes of Fame Air Museum

Planes of Fame Air Museum, located in Chino, California, is one of the finest aviation museums on the west coast with a collection of over 150 rare and historic aircraft and other displays. Many of the museum’s planes are in a flyable condition and the best event to see them soaring in the sky is the annual Planes of Fame Airshow. All pictures in this article are from the 2017 Planes of Fame Airshow.

The next air show is scheduled for the weekend of May 5-6, 2018. Over 40 Planes of Fame and visiting aircraft are scheduled to perform including the N9MB Flying Wing, P-26 Peashooter, P-47 Thunderbolts, P-38 Lightnings, P-51 Mustangs, B-25 Mitchell, C-47 Skytrain, F-86 Sabre, MiG 15 and many others.

Guest performers

Other notable performers include Sanders Aeronautics with a Hawker Sea Fury, Gregory ‘Wired’ Colyer in a Lockheed T-33, Sean Tucker with his Oracle biplane, the P-51 Mustang Voodoo team with the world’s fastest piston engine aircraft, and an A-10 Thunderbolt II to perform a traditional Heritage Flight with one or more vintage warbirds.

Other attractions

Many other aircraft and military vehicles will be available for viewing as static displays. You can also participate in a morning panel discussion with veterans who fought in WWII and the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. Many vendors will be selling aviation related gifts.

Sunrise Photo Pass

There is also a special attraction aimed at aviation photographers who are able to get up very early. With a Sunrise Photo Pass, after you show up at the Chino airport at 5:30 am, you get a chance to photograph historic aircraft in the morning light and without the crowds. The pass, which costs $90, also includes general admission to for the air show and usually sells out very quickly.

The gates open both days at 8 am with aerial performances scheduled to start at 10:40 am and end around 4 pm. General admission is $25 (kids under 11 free) and since the air show is museum’s primary fundraising events, the revenue helps preserve the aviation history and keep their aircraft flying for everybody’s enjoyment.
