OV-10 Takes to the Skies at the Planes of Fame Museum

by | Aug 6, 2024 | 2 comments

The North American Rockwell OV-10 Bronco, a twin-turboprop light attack and observation aircraft, emerged in the 1960s as a specialized platform for counter-insurgency combat. It saw widespread use during the Vietnam war due to its ruggedness, simplicity and short takeoff and landing (STOL) capabilities.

Beyond its wartime service, the OV-10 Bronco found new roles. Surplus Air Force and Marine Corps Broncos are still in use by California’s Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. CALFIRE Broncos serve as a tanker lead-in aircraft and as an aerial platform from which the entire firefighting operation is coordinated.

Last Saturday, 8/3/24, aviation enthusiasts gathered at the Planes of Fame Museum in Chino, CA for the monthly “Hangar Talk” and “Flying Demo” event. This time, they had a rare opportunity to walk around a privately owned North American Rockwell OV-10D Bronco (N16854) with its visually distinctive twin booms and the horizontal stabilizer that connects them. The plane bore the markings of the Light Attack Squadron VAL-4, known as the “Black Ponies”.

A few minutes after noon, the pilot, Matt Nightingale climbed into the cockpit and the Bronco’s twin turboprop engines roared to life. Large crowds that had gathered for the event watched it taxi towards the runway and soon after soar gracefully over the museum’s grounds for about 20 minutes.
